effort to attend training.
Underage coaching continues on Saturday mornings for the children of the three
National Schools, St Brendans, St Edwards, and Calry at 11am in the Technical

round of the championship with a thoroughly deserved win over Tubbercurry on
Tuesday last at Hazelwood. Played in ideal weather conditions Calry/St Josephs
began well and had a number of points on the board within a few minutes. The
consistent pressure continued from our forwards and the first goal was scored
by S. McDermott. Further goals followed from C. Heraghty, P. Woulfe and a second
from S. McDermott. Some excellent goalkeeping from R. McDermott prevented Tubbercurry
from scoring a penalty effort. By Half time Calry/St Josephs let by 4-8 to 0-6.
Tubbercurry did not go down without a fight and reeled off a number of points
in a row without a reply. The second half was played in the same intensity as
the first but Calry/St Josephs had the upper hand throughout. This half produced
one goal for the home team, a good effort from N. Stenson. Tubbercurry scored

The Senior team played their second game in championship on Saturday against
Easkey. Our team were down a number of players but still battled hard against
a strong Easkey side. Easkey who had the wind in the first half built up a big
score before Calry registered their first point. Calry got a goal just before
the end of the first half when the ball broke down to Vincent Nally who fisted
the ball into the Easkey net. At the break it was 1-11 to 1-3. In the second
half Calry played a lot better with the wind and brought the difference between
the teams down to five points but Easkey got a couple of goals and went on to
win on a scoreline of Calry/St.Jospehs 1-10 Easkey 3-14. Team on Duty; D.McGuinn,

The senior team kicked off their Senior Championship with a draw against Shamrock
Gaels in Ballymote on Saturday evening. Shamrock gaels were first on the score
board but it wasn’t long before Fergus Horan got Calrys first score with a great
point. Horan then got his second with a well taken free from 45 metres out.
Calry were competing well with a determined gaels side but it was Shamrock gaels
who were ahead on the scoreboard midway through the half. Calry weren’t long
matching gaels when Benny O’Reilly showed his class when he beat two Gaels backs
before hammering the ball into the Gaels net. At the break it was all level
on a scoreline of 1-2 to 0-5. Calry stepped it up a gear at the start of the
second half and it was Damien O’Boyle who was causing the Gaels backs trouble.
O’Boyle got Calry going in the second half with three well taken points. Colin
O’Hara added to the Calrys lead and we found ourselves up by five points with
15 minutes left but the introduction of Johnny Kenny to the Gaels side seemed
to lift their team. Gaels started chipping away at the Calry lead and going
into injury time we found ourselves ahead by the minimum of margins but it was
Kenny who kicked an excellent point to get the draw for his team. Calry/St.Josephs

The Intermediate team kicked off their Championship season with a very exciting
and pulsating game against Eastern Harps in Tubbercurry on Sun 23rd July in
ideal conditions and in front of a large enthusiastic crowd. The game was played
at a frenetic pace with the Harps running into a big lead. However our team
stepped up a gear and brought back the lead to within a kick of a ball and missed
some scores to edge ahead. Every player put in a tremendous performance of grit,
determination and passion and could have got a result from this game with a
bit more luck in the shooting department. Team on duty:- Brian O’Reilly, Conor

The senior team had a hard earned win over a strong St Molaise Gaels team on

a point at half time. Our lads lifted their game in the second half and a great
point from an acute angle from Fergus Horan put us further ahead. Benny O’Reilly
hit three more points but Calry gave away a penalty which was converted by a
Gaels forward to level the match. In the closing seconds of the match Calry

Underage coaching continues on Saturday mornings for the children of the three
National Schools, St Brendans, St Edwards, and Calry at 11am in the Technical
College pitch in Ballinode. The U-10 boys training continues in the Hazelwood
pitch on each Monday at 6pm. The U-10 team are the pride of the club this week
after their magnificent and historic win over St Marys in the North Board U-10
Frank Pugh League. This was a performance laced with tremendous displays by
all players. But to win finals a team requires some players to dig extra deep
and play an extra ordinary game and our team had this calibre of player in abundance.
Jason Finnegan gave a towering display at midfield and made some inspirational
catches and clearances when moved to defence:, Aaron Flynn played with flair
and confidence and orchestrated many brilliant moves and scored crucial points
and covered every blade of grass on the pitch:, Darragh O Brien gave an outstanding
display of high fielding, powerful running, and magnificent score taking:, Darragh
Cummins gave a tour de force performance at full back and lifted the teams efforts
when moved out the field:, Ciaran Stensons strong running, astute positioning,
clever passing and hard work kept the opposition on full alert;, Conor Heraghty
played a captains part from centre back , and he was the rock where many of
the oppositions attacks failed. All the players played with passion and courage
and high skill levels which was required to overcome a brave, agile and skilful
St Marys team. Conor Heraghty was presented with the Frank Pugh Cup by Chairman
of the North Div Board Peter Mc Hugh amid scenes of unbridled joy and excitement.
Special thanks to managers and coaches:- David Cummins, Brian Maguire, Pat Stenson,

The Seminar on ''Alcohol and Drug abuse among the Youth in Sport'' was held
on Wed 29th March in the Clarion Hotel. Over four hundred people attended the
event and it was heartening to see the large number of young people. The guest
speakers were inspiring and each delivered their thoughts and ideas from different
perspectives in a focused manner and connected well with the audience. The Mayoress
of Sligo was the first speaker, followed by County Board Chairman John Murphy,
then Mary Quinn president of Ladies Connacht Council, then Barnes Murphy and
Eamonn O'Hara Sligo All Stars, then former GAA President Dr Mick Loftus, then
footballer of the Year 2005- Stephen O'Neill of Tyrone and finally the legendry
Michael O'Mhuireachtaigh who had a very captive audience for his words of wisdom.
Gerry Farry was a very fair and impartial ''Fear an Ti'' , with Tommy Clarke
helping out and Club Bord na nOg Chairman Eddie Mc Hale opened and closed the
Seminar with words of gratitude for all the Guest Speakers, and especially the
large audience. He thanked Sligo Sports and Recreation Partnership and Deirdre
Lavin for their tangible support, and all the other sponsors who helped make
the night a great success. He finally thanked the hard working committee especially
Geraldine Flanagan and Loretta Kearins and the Clarion Hotel for hosting the
event. Hopefully this may be the start of an annual event to heighten the awareness
of the abuse of alcohol, and drugs in Sport. The guest speakers were all presented
with well designed plaques by Gilroy Tiling and neatly framed by Kevin Woods,
Tonnaphobble. The Club greatly appreciates the time and effort spent on this
Project by our hard working Bord na nOg Chairman Eddie Mc Hale. A job well done.
There is an underage Blitz taking place in the Sligo I.T pitch from 11am- 12.30
on next Saturday 7th April. Children from the three National Schools, St Brendans,
St Edwards, and Calry are invited to attend for what promises to be an enjoyable
fun Blitz of football. The minor team commenced their League campaign away to
Easkey St Farnans in the Easkey pitch in very wet and windy conditions on Mon
27th March. This was a game of two halves and we notched up a good score of
3gls & 4pts with the wind in the first half, against 5 very well executed points
by the opposition. Our players played very well against the wind with Brian
O'Reilly's kick outs often going beyond the forty five metre line, and also
making some great saves. Thomas Kelly gave a man of the match performance from
wing back , and Colm Devaney belied his age with some fine catches and astute
passing. Our team failed to score in he second half and worked very hard to
cope with the severe pressure from the opposition, and were hanging on for dear
life as the final whistle approached. The opposition had whittled the lead down
to the minimum margin of one point, and in fairness no team deserved to be beaten,
but we had a bit of luck on our side. Team on duty:- Colm Devaney, Thomas Kinsella,
Joey Scanlon, Brendan Mullane, Sean Mc Ginley, Dane Torsney, Damien O'Boyle,
Stefan Callaghan, Thomas Kelly, Cormac Coyne, Aaron Foley, Gary Feeney, Brian
O'Reilly, Richard O'Boyle, Patrick Roddy. The minor team played away to St Johns
on Thurs 30th March in very wet and slippery conditions. Our team were one point
ahead at half time. In the second half the opposition were more focussed and
eager and ran out winners. Team on duty:- Brian Drury, Thomas Kinsella, Joey
Scanlon, Brendan Mullane, Mark Fowley, Dane Torsney, Joseph Keown, Damien O'Boyle,
Stefan Callaghan, Mark Halton, Mark Hynes, Thomas Kelly, Cormac Coyne, Brian
O'Reilly, Brian Mc Govern. Subs:- Sean MC Ginley, Aaron Fowley, Orry Torsney,
Fintan Keown, Colin Feehily, Richard O'Boyle. Next game is at home to Coolera/St/hill
on Monday 3rd April. Minor training takes place on each Wednesday at 7.30pm
in the Ballinode College pitch and all players should make a special effort
to attend. The U-16 team training has commenced and details are available from

Tommy was President of the Club for many years. Previous to that he was pitch
and Dressing Room co-ordinator. The Dressing rooms were always in pristine condition
under his watch. He was ever present around the Dressing Room Area for all underage
and adult games with a welcoming smile and a kind word for all players, mentors
and supporters.. Since the Club was founded in 1972 Tommy has been involved
from fundraising, pitch maintenance, Dressing room co-ordinator and laterally
as Club President. He was always enthusiastic about Club progress and attended
all the home games and many of the away games. He received the Club Person of
the Year Award in 1987 for his commitment and dedication to the Club. Tommy
would brighten up any company with his quick wit and affable personality. He
will surely be missed from the pitch surroundings and from the community. We
offer deepest sympathy to his wife Bridget, and family, Carmel, Marian, Vinny
and Sean T, and all family members and friends. They can justly remember him
with pride and affection. Ar dheis de go raibg a ainm dilis.
