The clubs monthly meeting takes place on Monday 13th in Hazelwood.

The clubs Senior Hurlers have progressed into this years County Final
having beaten Martin Walsh's Tourlestrane team on a score line of 1-16 to
1-08 on Sunday last. The match was played in ideal conditions for hurling
with the sun shining and the pitch was in an immaculate state considering
that the match was postpone on Saturday due to the heavy rainfall, a credit
to the Tourlestrane ground staff.
The match itself was played at break neck pace, the highlights from a Calry
point of view saw the return of David Collery to the cause, which he
answered by scoring a fine goal to settle the team into the game this was
followed by a rare Eamon Kelly point that saw Calry leading by 2points at
half time 1-9 to 1-7, was. In the second half Keith Raymond got some fine
points from both play and from frees and was aptly assisted by Damian Burke
while the half back line managed to keep the Tourlestrane forwards at bay
and the defence only allowed two second half scores. Goalkeeper Ian McHugh
made a fine diving save towards the end of the match from Jerome Quinn that
thwarted any ideas Tourlestrane had of a comeback.
The final score in a well contested semi final was 1-16 to 1-9.The team
was as follows: : I.McHugh: G.Barrett, P.Scanlon, C.MaGuire: F.Coyne (c),

The minor team play Curry in the Sligo Minor Championship A Final this
Sunday 5th Oct in Markievicz Park at 2pm. This is the first time
Calry/St.Joseph's have made the A final. The final is a curtain raiser for
the Sligo Senior Club Final. We wish John Griffin and his team the best of

It was a busy weekend for the Clubs Hurlers this weekend in the Sligo
Senior Hurling Championship with two games played over the weekend firstly
on Saturday in Calry, Naomh Eoin were the opponents with the pitch all the
better for last weeks dry spell. The lads had to dig in hard in the second
half to overcome a valiant N.Eoin challenge on a 3-18 to 2-7.The match was
notable for the return of the two managers back to action, Calry Ladies
Managers Eamon Lonergan scoring a fine goal and successful Nicky Rackard
Sligo County Manager Mickey Galvin, slotting into the full back line in the
second half. The team was
C.Hackett:G.Barrett(1-0),P.Scanlon,C.MaGuire:F.Coyne (c), R.Cox
(0-4),C.Kingston;L.Reiddy(0-3),C.Griffin(0-2):D.Cox(0-2)R.Watters,D.Burke(0

On Sunday the club travelled out to Enniscrone to play Western Gaels with
the winners topping the Group table of the hurling championship. Playing
into a strong wind the lads held Western Gaels at half time to level scores
of 1-4 each. However in the second half the team really got motoring
despite some over zealous stick work by the Gaels the lads remained focused
and concentrated on hurling to pull away and win on a 2-16 to 1-8 score
line to top the Group stage. The team was: I.McHugh:
G.Barrett,P.Scanlon,C.MaGuire:F.Coyne (c), R.Cox
(0-2),C.Kingston;L.Reiddy,E.Kelly:M.Gilmartin,D.Burke(0-5):M.Shelly(1-0)K.R

half. Farnans came back with two soft goals leaving Calry just one ahead at

elements were against our girls. Farnans ran out deserved winners in the

The senior hurlers played Tubbercurry on Sunday last in the 2nd round of
the hurling championship in Tubbercurry. In a match that was played in good

was that Paul Severs accounted for all but 1 of Tubbercurry's 17 points of
which 14 came from frees surely a record of some sorts.

The U16’s convincingly defeated Tubbercurry/ Cloonacool showing great
spirit and determination in their last Group 1, A Championship game away on
Thursday evening last. This means they now go through to the county semi
final due to be played on Thursday the 21st of August although this is to
be confirmed by the fixtures committee. They await the winners of Curry &
Coolera in next weeks final Group 2 game decider.

The team started very well and accumulated some hard fought scores with
good interplay from John & Paul Melvin, Eoin Doherty, and an inspirational
point from Paddy Herity from an impossible angle. The score at half time
was Calry 0-11 Tubbercurry 0-1. Tubbercurry came out fighting in the second
half and added some good early points onto the scoreboard. However, some
great defensive work by Michael Cryan, Pauric Keaney, Michael Martin and
Conor Gilligan limited their attacks and Calry scored 4 points without
reply to keep ten points between the teams. Jonathan Mc Goldrick shifted
some heavy tackles in midfield and defended heartily in the second half
allowing the forwards space and time on the ball. In the forwards Paul
Melvin, Paddy Herity and Eoin Doherty won lots of possession and ran at the
Tubbercurry defense relentlessly throughout the second half. They were well
supported in the full forward by the ever reliable Christopher Wolfe and
determined Clive Brennan who set up some scores for John Melvin who showed
great confidence and strength winning many high balls at full forward.
There were some great performances on the night from Owen Doherty who
scored 8 great points, Michael Flynn with 3 well taken scores from half
back, Eddie Connell who was a colossus in defence, and a man of the match
display from captain Glen Cryan. He covered every blade of grass, shaking
off some hard tackles and knocks and even managed to get on the score sheet
with a massive long range point. The final score was Calry St Josephs 0-20,
Tubbercurry Cloonacool 0-5. Overall it was a strong and disciplined team
performance from everyone with not a single booking picked up by anyone.
Many thanks to our umpires on the night Paraigh Mc Goldrick and Paul Healy
and match referee Malachy Maher. The team on duty on Thursday last was –
Jason McGowan, Micheal Martin, Eddie Connell, Michael Cryan, Michael Flynn,
Conor Gilligan, Caolan Lowry, Glen Cryan, Johnathan Mc Goldrick, Paul
Melvin, Owen Doherty, Patrick Heraghty, Christopher Wolfe, John Melvin,
Clive Brennan. Subs: Gerry Ward, Nathan Scanlon, Stephen Mc Dermott, Owen
Kelpie, Ciaran Mc Nasser.

Special thanks to the many Club Members who attended the Celebration
Function for long serving County Board Secretary Tommy Kilcoyne in the Park
Hotel on last Fri 16th May. Tommy has served the County with distinction,
integrity and has been a great ambassador for the County for 38 years. This
is indeed tremendous service on a voluntary capacity and it was fitting
that all the Clubs were represented and many distinguished guests attended
and that Uachtarain C.L.C.G Nicky Brennan was the special guest. We wish
Tommy, Rosaleen and family many years of health and happiness in his
retirement from Secretary but knowing Tommy he will not finish with his
passion of promoting the Association.
Special thanks to the committee and especially Mairead Gonley who organised
this very successful Celebration Function for Tommy Kilcoyne.
Best wishes to the Sligo Senior team and Mgt all the best as they commence
the defence of the ‘’Nestor Cup’’ in the Connacht Ch/ip away in Ruislip
against London on next Sunday 25th May.
Congratulations to Laura Dillon who had a baby girl on Wednesday 14th May.
We wish Conor Nally all the best with his new job in Dublin.

The U-16 team were defeated in their Division 1 league game away to Eastern
Harps on Sunday evening last. We didn’t get off to the best of starts and
conceded two early 2 goals with some poor defending. Calry rallied well
though grit and determination and scored 4 good points without reply with
some well worked team play. Tempers flared in the last few minutes of the
first half and we were unlucky to have a player sent off just before the
half time whistle. Eastern Harps were the stronger team in the second half
and ran out winners with the extra man. Calry did not give up and fought
hard to get back into the game with some great performances from Owen
Doherty, Michael Flynn, Eamon Mc Hale, Darragh Mc Connan, and a man of the
match display from captain Glen Cryan who covered every blade of grass on
the night. The team on duty on Sunday night last was – Jason McGowan,

McConnan, John Melvin , Owen Doherty, Glen Cryan, Kevin Gilmartin, Patrick

The Senior team drew with St Marys in Division 1B of the league on Saturday
evening last. This was a great game played at championship pace with both
teams having the greatest of respect for each other. Calry opened the
scoring with the on form Benny O’Reilly linking onto a ball kicked in by
Keith Raymond, O’Reilly had only one thing on his mind and turned inside
his marker and finished into the back of the Mary’s net. Marys hit back
soon after when a mix up after a 45’ was kicked in and wasn’t dealt with
and the ball ended up in the back of the Calry net. Liam Mc Guinn was next
to score for Calry after some nice passing Mc Guinn didn’t hesitate and
slotted the ball over. Fergus Horan got another score for Calry soon after.
St Marys hit over three frees in the first half from Stephen Coen. Benny
O’Reilly got Calrys last score of the half with a great score from an acute
angle. The Calry backs worked very hard and kept St.Marys scoreless from
play in the first half. At half time the scoreline was Calry/St.Joseph’s
1-3 St Mary’s 1-3. The second half was as exciting as the first with both
teams giving 110%. Fergus Horan got Calrys first score of the second half
with a massive score from 45 yards out on the left. Brian O’Reilly was
winning a lot of breaks around the centre and kicking them into the full
forward line and it was this tactic that worked for Calrys next score when
his brother Benny put over another score for Calry. Brian Hynes and Cormac
Coyne had a great game keeping the fast Mary’s forwards under control.
Calry missed a lot of frees in the game which on another day would have
been converted. Going into the final 8 minutes of the match Calry were down
by two points. Alan Maguire converted a close range free and with a couple
of minutes left on the clock Benny O’Reilly kicked over a great score to
draw the game. Calry scorers Benny O’Reilly (1-3), Fergus Horan (0-2), Liam
McGuinn (0-1), Alan Maguire (0-1) Calry play St.Marys again on Sunday 18th
May at 3pm. Please support the local lads and the match promises to be
another great game.
The seniors played Eastern Harps last Thursday in Hazelwood. This was Benny
O’Reilly's first game back after injury but he didn’t look rusty and score
1-4 within the first 13 minutes of the first half. Brian O’Reilly put over
a free midway through the first half. Benny got another goal before half
time with a looping shot over the Harp goal keeper. At half time the score
was Calry/St.Josephs 2-5 Eastern Harps 0-5. In the second half Harps came
out fighting and put over a lot of unanswered scores to their credit. Brian
O’Reilly put over 3 frees in the second half which steadied the ship.
Another point from Fergus Horan and one from play from Brian O’Reilly gave
Calry the win on a scoreline of Calry/St.Josephs 2-10 Eastern Harps 0-12.
The Senior team have qualified for the first ever Senior County final on
Friday 23rd May in Monsignor Hynes Park Grange at 8pm against close
neighbours St Marys in the Kiernan Cup Final. Well done to the players and
managers Aidan Mc Connan and Gerry Higgins and best of luck to all in the
final. Please come out and support your team.
The intermediate team lost to Ballisadare on Sunday in Hazelwood on a
scoreline of Calry/St.Josephs 0-9 Ballisadare 2-8.
The Junior team lost to St Molaise Gaels on Friday evening last after a
very exciting match which two periods of extra time were played. Calry lost
by a point in the end. Best for Calry were Shane Gilroy, Neil O’Brien and
Cormac Coyne. Team on Duty: B.Jinks, A.Devaney, Cormac Coyne, J.Scanlon,
J.McGowan, J.Murphy, T.McDaid, S.Martyn, C.Nally, S.Gilroy, Brian O’Reilly,
N.O’Brien, A.Love, J.Griffin, T.O’Reilly Subs used C.Ward, R.Leahy

Pat Branley- An appreciation.
It is with great shock and sadness that we learned of the sudden and
untimely death of our esteemed colleague and Club Member and one of our
community icons Pat Branley on Saturday last 3rd May 2008. Pat was born in
Colgagh Calry in 1935. He commenced his Gaelic football career in
Summerhill College and then played with Sean Mc Dermotts, and after they
folded up he played with Drumcliffe and later on with St Columbas. Pat was
one of the founders of the Calry Gaels GAA Club in 1972 and has been
actively involved with the Club through its evolution to the now Calry St
Josephs GAA Club. He has occupied many and varied roles up to his untimely
passing. He was a larger than life character with a sincere and deep
interest in all aspects of GAA at Club, Division, and County and National
level. During his long and distinguished career with the club he served in
many roles with distinction from initially playing, refereeing, one of the
Club founders, Chairman, Treasurer, club team selector, Club delegate to
the County Board, Ciste Gael organiser, a Trustee of the Calry St Josephs
Community Park, Scor, launched the Club Lotto, Lotto co-ordinator, pitch
development and maintenance, match official, and tremendous fundraiser. He
was still heavily involved promoting and selling the Yearly Lotto tickets
up to his death and his persuasive negotiation skills convinced almost all
he met to purchase a ticket. As a fundraiser he contested the Calry
Mayoral election in 1980 and later was involved in a novel fundraiser of
‘’Guess Pats Weight.’’ He also served the GAA outside the Club as Chairman
and member of the North Division Board, County activities committee, and
delegate to Connacht Council Convention, and a long serving member and
worker of the Marchievicz Park committee. Pat was known far and wide within
the County and indeed outside the County as a loyal and committed Sligo
supporter and he travelled to many venues as a proud black and white
supporter. He also travelled to London for the Championship games with
London. He was a proud Sligo man in 1975 and 2007 when Sligo won the
‘’Nestor Cup’’ and Connacht Title. Another proud moment for Pat was the
Official opening of the Gaelic Pitch in Hazelwood in 1996 by Uachtarain
C.L.C.G Jack Bootman. Pat was awarded the prestigious ‘’Club Person of the
Year Award’’ in 1997 for his many years of committed and loyal service to
the Club. We want to record our sincere appreciation for Pat’s dedication,
commitment and hard work to the development and promotion of the Club. The
road to Club success is always under construction and Pats continued
efforts, enthusiasm and loyalty has helped progress the Club to its current
healthy position. Pat was a true Gael, and a great community activist
always willing to help others, and even with the changing society he held
on to his deeply held values of integrity, honesty, faith and love of
neighbour. The contribution of individuals who work on a voluntary basis
has a unique quality because it stems from interest and commitment. Every
community is immensely improved by the involvement of volunteers. Their
work is encouraging and uplifting for all concerned. Pat was one of those
community workers and a larger than life character who wore neither airs
nor graces, and what you saw was what you got. Pat was the soul of the
association as well as a pillar that keeps it in place. Pat has written
himself into the history books of the Club as he stayed the course during
good times and bad and kept the interest of the Club as one of his main
priorities. He was very thorough and sincere in everything he did, and took
no short cuts, and followed each task to a successful conclusion. Pat was
a person who you always wanted to have in your corner, fighting your cause.
In his passing we must say farewell to a community and sporting giant of
his time. Pat was a solid neighbour of unlimited loyalty and a passionate
supporter for what the club represents, and we deeply mourn his passing.
Pat has left many memories for all to cherish from his long and
distinguished career in the community of Calry St Josephs. Finally the
community of Calry St Josephs is in deep mourning and shock and filled with
profound sadness at the sudden death of Pat Branley. However the community
is richer for his presence and we are all proud and privileged to have met
and worked with Pat. We offer our sincere sympathy to Pats brothers Tom,
Jim, Denis, Owen and sisters Mary, Margaret and Catherine and their
families. May his gentle soul rest in peace. Ni beidh a leithead ann aris.

The death has taken place of Sean Sexton, Jinks Ave and late of
Cashelgarron Sligo. Sean was one of the founder members of the Calry Gaels
Club back in the 1970's. The Calry/St. Joseph's club wish to extend our
deepest sympathy to his wife Mary and family. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam
dilis.

The club extends sincere sympathy to Geraldine and PJ Cunningham and family
on the death of Geraldines father Jim Eccles

The U-16 team continued their division 1 league campaign at Hazelwood on
Friday evening last with a very exciting draw against Drumcliffe/Rosses
Point, with the final score Calry 2-11 Drumcliffe 3-8. Calry lead at half
time by 7 points to 3 but within 3 minutes of the start of the 2nd half
Drumcliffe had hit 2 goals to put them into the lead. Calry fought back
very well and with the help of goals from Patrick Heraghty and Glen Cryan
they were leading by 3 points as the game entered into injury time but with
the last attack of the match Drumcliffe grabbed a goal before the referee
blew the final whistle. During the match Calry hit the woodwork on 2
occasions as they went for goals and they also had a penalty saved in the
2nd half so they could easily have won this match. In the league campaign
to date Calry have had a narrow 1 point victory over Tubbercurry but have
suffered defeats to St Johns & Curry. Thanks to all the hard work and
dedication of the management team of Brian Reilly & Dave O Hara. The team

28/4/08

The Senior team pulled off a great win against St Farnan’s on Saturday
26th. Played in sunny conditions it was St Farnan’s who were fastest out of
the blocks and were putting scores on the board. Calry had chances but
couldn’t convert them into scores. John Gaffney got Calry’s opening score
of the game with Keith Raymond getting Calry’s two other scores of the
first half. Approaching half time Calry were seven points down and it
looked like only a miracle could save them. At half time the scoreline was
Calry/St.Joseph’s 0-3 St.Farnan’s 1-8. In the second half Calry were a
different team. Every player gave 110% and this paid off with Keith Raymond
and Brian O’Reilly slotting over the scores. Raymond was outstanding at
full forward with his pace and fielding. Raymond and O’Reilly put over two
great frees from the sideline, O’Reilly from the left and Raymond from the
right with the outside of the left boot. Calry’s backs worked awful hard in
the second half keeping St.Farnan’s to two points. Going into the closing
stages Calry were down by two point but a high ball sent goal wards was met
by the towering Raymond who punched the ball into the Farnan’s net. Another
point in injury time gave Raymond a remarkable 1-7 for his days work with
Brian O’Reilly getting 0-4. Final score Calry/St.Joseph’s 1-12 St.Farnan’s
1-10.
The Senior team beat Castleconnor on Tuesday 22nd April in a Kiernan Cup
play off in Castleconnor. Our lads worked hard throughout the match and it
was the hard work that paid off in the end with Vincent Nally, Fergus
Horan, Dermot Horan each getting a couple of scores.
The Intermediate team lost by the slimiest of margins to St Michaels on
Thursday 24th April in Hazelwood. Calry worked hard through out the match
but will regret their missed goal chances. Colin Feehily grabbed three of
Calrys points with Rory Leahy and Shane Gilroy getting two apiece. Dara Cox
worked very hard at full forward and was rewarded with a well taken point.
Anthony Love and Jason Murphy got the other two scores for the
intermediates but it wasn’t enough as the match ended up Calry/St.Joseph’s
0-10 St Michael’s 0-11.
The Intermediate team lost to Tourlestrane on Sunday 28th April. The lads
were awful unlucky and missed some scoreable chances and ended up losing
by a point.

30th April at 7pm and play Castleconnor in Hazelwod on Saturday 3rd May at
7pm.

The senior team got the year off to a good start with a win against
Drumcliffe/Rosses Point on Saturday afternoon. Played in perfect conditions
it was Drumcliffe who got off to the better start and were putting Calry
under pressure with some good scores from Sean Flannery. Calry kept in
touch with a great score from Damien O’Boyle from 45 yards after receiving
a pass from his brother Barry. Two Alan Maguire frees meant at half time
the score was Calry/St.Josephs 0-3 Drumcliffe/Rosses Point 0-6. In the
second half Calry stepped it up a gear and when Alan Maguires shot from way
out on the left looped over the Drumcliffe keeper and into the back of the
net it gave Calry an extra lift. Conor Nally was working tirelessly in the
half forward line and was rewarded with two good scores in the second half.
Corner forward Tony O’Reilly playing in his brother Bennys position kept
the O’Reilly flag flying when he put over a close range score. Barry
O’Boyle put Calry ahead going into the last 5 minutes of the game and Calry
went on and built on the lead with a good score from Ciaran Coyne along
with an Alan Maguire free to win on a scoreline of Calry/St.Josephs 1-10
Drumcliffe/Rosses Point 0-10. Team on Duty: B.McGovern, J.Scanlon, D.Horan,

brothers playing for Calry. We wish Fergus Horan and Joey Scanlon a quick
return to the playing fields after picking up injuries on Saturday and to
