HURLING: The clubs senior hurling team completed an historic three in a row on
Saturday last in Tourlestrane by beating Western Gaels on a score- line of
2-06 to 1-06. Calry have now completed three in a row in all grades of
championship hurling in both adult and youth’s competition with the vast
majority of Saturdays team having been successful in underage competitions
too. As the score line suggests defences were on top through out the match
with some fine displays from Calry’s full back line of Jamie Kenny, Cian
Hackett and Ciaran Maguire. Mickey Gilmartin and Mick Shelly scored two
goals in the first half having been set up by man of the match young Kevin
Gilmartin appearing in his first county final.
In the second half just as Western Gaels thought they were getting a
foothold in the game and narrowing the gap, the score of the game came from
Liam Reidy who gathered a ball in defence and despite being forced wide put
over a great point from the 45 meter touchline. This score rallied the
Calry team and Keith Raymond, David Colleary and Eamon Kelly closed down
the midfield area with Keith firing over two points from long distant
frees. The experience gathered over the last few years in finals both at
club an in all Irelands stood to the lads in the end as they saw out the
game to secure our three in a row. David Colleary was a proud Calry man as
he accepted the senior cup from County Chairman Tom Brenan, he thanked
Manager Tony Gallagher and his management team for their effort in guiding
the club to this historic achievement.
The Team was: Ian McHugh: Cian Hackett, Jamie Kenny,Ciaran MaGuire: Fiachra
Coyne, Liam Reidy(0-1),Ronan Cox; Keith Raymond(0-5),Dara Cox: Michael
Gilmartin(1-0)Eamon Kelly; Kevin Gilmartin,Damian Burke, Mick
Shelly(1-0):subs Niall McDermott, Shane Martyn, Ronan Watters, Garoid
Kelly, Noel Treacy, Patrick Scanlon, Eamon Lonergan, Michael Galvin
Congratulations also to Kevin Gilmartin on becoming the recipient of the
first County Final Man of the Match award picked by the County Board
Committee, which was greatly appreciated and sponsored kindly by John Doyle
who was linesman. As Kevin picked up the accolades for his performance
Saturdays win also marked a special day for club sponsor and player Ronan
‘Uisce’ Watters who collected another winner’s medal on Saturday. Ronan
played in and won his first medal as a youngster on the Craobh Rua team
that beat Easkey in the GAA Centenary year in 1984. Both of this years
teams evolved from those participating clubs in 1984, here’s hoping that
Kevin will still be playing in the 150th anniversary final!!!!
A special word of thanks to the Tourlestrane Club and their hurling
committee for again having their pitch and facilities in pristine condition
for the final at such short notice. The club now await the outcome of the
Leitrim final between Glencar/Manor and St Mary’s Carrick on Shannon who
the club will play in the Connacht Junior Hurling Semi-Final on the Bank
Holiday weekend in Markievicz Park.

LADIES: Calry Ladies had a devastating loss in the semi-final of the Junior Ladies Championship to Eoghan Rua at a sun-drenched Castleconnor on Sunday last, September 13th. The home side started brightly, and an early goal helped them establish an early advantage. Calry responded well, with good points from Lorraine Dolan, Clodagh Watters and Deirdre Quinn. An Emer Lindsay goal before half time continued Calry's fightback, leaving the hosts 1-7 to 1-5 in front at the break. An early Aisling O'Connor goal in the second half brought Calry level. Further scores from captain Michelle Lehany, Aisling O'Connor and Lorraine Dolan saw the gallant Calry team lead by two points with time running out. However, Eoghan Rua refused to give up and a late goal well into injury time from the home team saw them win by a single point and leave Calry devastated at the final whistle. Final score Eoghan Rua 2-12 Calry St. Joseph's 2-11.

Calry kept the high tempo up from the start and battled hard for every ball, at half time Calry were leading by four points. In the second half Harps came back at Calry. Paul Taylors free taking was flawless and Harps pulled back Calry’s lead. Ciaran Coyne then converted a penalty after Barry O’Boyle was fouled. Going into injury time Calry were up by 2 points but harps pulled a point back and a converted free seconds from the end means the lads will have to do it all again on Saturday.

SENIORS:  Best of luck to our Senior team who play Easkey in Tubbercurry on Saturday 25th July at 6pm. Please come out and support the lads who have put in a huge effort over the last couple of months.

JUNIOR:  The Junior team made history on Friday 17th July when they won the Sligo Div 5 League against Tubbercurry in Ballymote. The team were ably and confidently led on the field by captain Robert Boyd and off the field by team manager Tommy Clarke. This was a tough tenacious and very gritty performance from both teams with no player willing to concede defeat until the final whistle. Tubbercurry had the physiological edge going into the game having beaten our team earlier in the year. After a shaky start where nerves may have been a factor our team settled  into the game and gave as good as they got and battled bravely for every ball and every score. Both defence were very tight marking and gave nothing away cheaply and scores were difficult to get. But a sweeping move in the 5th minute of the second half  involving Fintan Keown, Rory Leahy, Barry O’Boyle, and the final pass to Ciaran Coyne who expertly dispatched the ball to the net which gave our team some breathing space and a great boost. Tubbercurry came back when they were awarded a penalty which was well taken and ensured  the result of the game would go down to the final whistle. The final score was Calry/St.Josephs 1-8 Tubbercurry 1-3.
John Murphy the county board chairman presented the cup to a delighted and overjoyed captain Robert Boyd. Team on Duty: A.Devaney, D.O’Hara, T.Scanlon, F.Keown, T.Kelly, A.Flynn, J.Keown, P.Kelly, R.Boyd, Ciaran Coyne, Cormac Coyne, B.O’Boyle, E.Doherty, Brian O’Reilly, B.McGovern Subs: R.Leahy, M.Fowley, R.O’Brien, G.Cryan, J.Murphy, I.Kearins, D.Gannon, D.Ferrick. Special thanks to the team sponsors John Keane Meats, Cartron and Kevin Keown, Bundoran Motors. Finally a very special thanks to all the supporters who travelled and gave the team great encouragement. Tim Hynes

HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP:  The Clubs hurlers have qualified for this year’s county semi-final’s with a game to spare after beating a gallant Tourlestrane team who pushed us all the way to the final whistle. The pitch and weather conditions were ideal for the match in Calry on Sunday last, many thanks to John Griffin for this. The game was played in a sporting manner and this was enhanced by referee Pat MaGuire who allowed play to flow freely while keeping a firm hand on proceedings. The Final score was Calry 4-14 Tourlestrane 1-9. The Team was: Ian Mc Hugh; Fiachra Coyne, Jamie Kenny, Ciarán Maguire; Michael Gilmartin, Liam Reidy, Ronan Cox (0-1); David Collery, Keith Raymond(0-7); Darragh Cox(0-1), Damien Burke (3-0), Mick Shelley(0-1), Kevin Gilmartin, Conor Griffin(0-3),Cian Hackett (0-1) Subs: Niall Mc Dermott, Joseph Keown, Noel Treacy, Shane Martyn, Ronan Watters, Eamon Lonergan, Thomas Kelly, Geoff Heinz, Gearóid Kelly (1-0)
Training continues on Wednesday night at 7.30pm in Calry. Our final fixture in this year’s round robin stage of the championship is against Tubbercurry on August 1st/2nd in Kilcoyne Park. Confirmation will be texted to players by Tony. It was good to see Derek King up and about on crutches at last weekends hurling match supporting the boys and on the road to recovery from his injury.
The Club’s next senior hurling fixture will be on Wednesday July 29th v St. Marys (Leitrim) in Carrick on Shannon at 8 pm, in the Connacht Senior Hurling knock out cup competition. The club have also been invited to play in the 2009 Meteor All Ireland Sevens that takes place at Kilmacud Crokes grounds on the All Ireland Hurling weekend.
Congrates to the junior mens team on winning the division 5 league final on Friday last and best of luck to the senior footballers for the 2009 championship season which starts this week end against Easkey.

GIRLS: Gaelic football training for U-12 and U-14 girls continues on Saturdays at 12.30pm on the pitch at Ballinode College opposite the Clarion Hotel. The under 12 team have been busy over the last couple of weeks. They had a good win against Ballymote and a draw against St. Michaels to place them joint second in their league. A win against St. Michael’s would have seen them top of the table with St. Mary’s. Unfortunately, they were then narrowly beaten by a determined Eoghan Rua side on Sunday evening last in the second-place league play-off. Thanks to the parents who came out on a cool and breezy evening in Enniscrone. The team now goes forward to play in the third place play-offs. Team on the night was: Lean Feehily, Megan McGoldrick, Ellen Healy, Carron Griffin, Megan Farrell, Sarah Keaney, Aine Costigan, Emer Costigan, Caoimhe Nicholson, Aoife Leahy, Ciara Meehan, Dayna Dykes, Oneisha Brennan, Shannon McManus, Melissa Cryan and Matea Leahy. North Division Junior Championship Final
By Gary Dillon

Calry/St.Josephs 1-8
St Molaise Gaels 0-5

Calry/St.Joseph’s captured the North Division Junior Championship with a good win over St Molaise Gaels on Sunday afternoon last. Conditions were perfect as the two teams took to the field at a sun drenched Oxfield Park.
Both teams started well and it was St Molaise Gaels who had the first chance of the match but Gerard Watters effort drifted wide. Calry launched the next attack with midfielder Cormac Coyne making a good run from the centre of the park and made no mistake when he fired over the bar from the right hand side. Molaise were picking up the breaks at midfield but couldn’t get an opening score on the board. Calry’s lively forward Eoin Doherty was unlucky soon after when his long range effort came back off the post and the Molaise backs quickly swept up the loose ball and cleared the danger. Brian Mc Govern got Calry’s second score after the wing forward received the ball after a good passing move by Calry and he pointed from an acute angle out on the left. Michael Devins had a chance from a free for Molaise after ten minutes but his effort from fourty yards out just dropped short. Molaise couldn’t get settled and were unlucky not to have a couple of scores on the board. Gerard Watters got Molaise’s first score of the afternoon, Watters played a one two and after receiving the ball back made no mistake with a well taken score from 25 yards out. Damien Kelly was full of energy and his runs from centre half back were causing Calry some trouble but the Calry backs kept tight and it was Calry who got the next score after  Eoin Doherty made no mistake from a 40 yard free kick. Half way through the first half both teams were having a fair share of possession with Calry having more success from a shooting point of view. Alan Carway lifted Molaise again with an excellent point after a great run from the midfielder. Calry were trying to work the ball into big full forward Brian O’Reilly and it was off O’Reilly that Calry got their next chance when the young man unselfishly laid the ball off to corner forward Mark Fowley who was surrounded by Molaise back and somehow managed to get a shot away but his effort  just went wide. Molaise were working hard but hadn’t their shooting boots on as they wasted another couple of scorable chances. Eoin Doherty put Calry 2 points ahead with another well taken free off the ground and going into the break Doherty put Calry further ahead with another free. At half time Calry/St.Joseph’s were ahead five points to Molaise’s two.
The second half started with great intensity despite the very warm conditions with both teams showing lots of energy. Calry started where they had left off with wing forward Damien Gannon getting a good point from the left a couple of minutes in. Calry could of extended their lead but Brian O’Reilly’s 45 just went wide. Doherty pointed again soon after from another free after the ball was picked up off the ground by a Molaise back. Gerard Watters had another chance to get his teams first point of the second half but his effort went wide after some good presure from the Calry backs. Calry thought they had scored a goal midway through the second half after Robert Boyd kicked a sideline ball into Brian O’Reilly who punched the ball into the net but O’Reilly was deemed to be in the square when the ball came in. Alan Carway got his second point of the match after a good build up from the Molaise half forward line. Calry were putting the Molaise backs under pressure with Ciaran Coyne and substitute Rory Leahy both putting in a big effort from the Calry wing forward positions. O’Reilly had another goal chance when he rose highest to field a high ball, he then rounded the keeper Peter Davis but Davis grabbed onto O’Reilly and referee Des Henry awarded a penalty.  Cormac Coyne bravely stepped up to take the penalty and his shot clipped the post as it went into the Molaise net. Molaise to their credit never gave up and were unlucky not to get a goal with ten minutes left on the clock but Calry’s Aiden Devaney pulled off a great save and Molaise pointed the lose ball for their fourth point of the game. Calry were reduced to 13 men soon after when Brian Mc Govern received a second yellow and substitute Tony Mc Daid got a straight red for an off the ball incident. Calry weren’t going to let their lead slip and worked hard going into the last five minutes of the match. Eoin Doherty extended Calry’s lead with another free before Gerard Watters got the last score of the game with a good free for St Molaise Gaels. At the final whistle it was Calry that were ahead on a scoreline of Calry/St.Joseph’s 1-8 St Molaise Gael’s 0-5.
Calry’s captain Robert Boyd gladly accepted the Markievicz Cup from the North Board Chairman Brian Drury. Thanks to Brian Drury, Tom Haran and Tim Hynes for their hard work on the competition. Also thanks to Drumcliffe/Rosses Point for the use of Oxfield which was in great condition.

SENIOR FOOTBALL: The senior team lost to St John’s in the first game of the league on Sunday afternoon. Both teams put in a big effort in a very sporting match. Calry were ahead at the break by the slimmest of margins thanks to four points from the reliable boot of Brian O’Reilly and one from Keith Raymond. In the second half both teams were trading scores and Calry had Brian O’Reilly to thank for some excellent frees which put Calry ahead midway through the second half but St John’s hit back with two goals late on to put them ahead. A well taken goal from Cormac Coyne gave Calry a lift but it wasn’t enough as St John’s went on to win on a scoreline of St John’s 2-7 Calry/St Joseph’s 1-8. The Seniors are down to play St Farnan’s on Sunday 1st March in Hazelwood at 3pm.

SENIOR HURLING: Congratulations to Keith Raymond, who had a busy weekend last week, on Friday last he collected his Connacht Sports writer player for the month of August 2008 as well as collecting the Sligo Hurler of the Year 2008 in recognition of his performances at full forward for club and county which cultimated in Keith scoring 1-8 in Croke Park as Sligo Hurlers became the first Senior Team from the County to lift silverware in GAA Headquaters.
On Saturday Keith became the first Sligo player to play for Connacht Hurlers managed by current Galway Hurling manager John McIntyre, since Cartron resident Arthur Kinsella but unlike Arthur who played for Craobh Rua (Sligo) and Buffers Alley(Wexford), Keith has learnt his trade with Calry/St Joseph’s and represented Sligo with distinction from underage to Senior status. Keith started in what has been an unfamilure position for him of midfield (he has led by example from full forward for club and county over the last couple of years) where he scored a point showing his versatility to adapt to any position on the field of play asked of him. Now Keith has the prospect of playing in
next month's M Donnelly Hurling Inter-provincial final in the sunny climes of Abu Dhabi.
It
s indeed a great honour not only for Keith but also to Calry/St Josephs GAA Club where the seeds were sown all those years ago on Tuesday and Thursdays on both Daveys field and the current club pitch, where Henry Cox helped culivate along with Joe Keane, the young guns of Calry hurling and now these days are finally showing fruition not only by winning three out of the last four county titles but now that sees 11 players representing Sligo and also on the successful Sligo panel that won the Nicky Rackard Cup managed by Michael Galvin and sees Keith going on to represent Connacht in the Railway Cup Final in two weeks time.
It offers an incentive to all young hurlers within the club that you can come from Calry/St Joseph
s in Sligo and overcome the likes of All Ireland Winners Brendan Cummins, Benny Dunne, Paul Kelly (
Tipperary); and all stars Ken McGrath (Waterford), Tony Griffin (Clare); Anhony O'Shaughnessy (Limerick), Stephen Molumphy (Waterford) to face a Leinster team with Kilkenny winner an All Stars Jackie Tyrell; Tommy Walsh, JJ Delaney Derek Lyng, Eddie Brennan and possibily King Henry Shefflin in Dubai, Dreams can be fulfilled, just ask Keith. All ticket enquiries for finals to be directed to Keith ,Henry Cox, Stephen Whelan or Marcey Coyne!!!
If you can
t make the Railway cup final in Dubai on March 14th, Club members can always go along to Markievicz park on Sunday next at 2.30pm and appreciate Keiths skills alongside those of fellow clubman, Fiachra Coyne, Captain of Sligo senior hurlers for 2009 and the 10 other Calry/St Josephs men on Michael Galvins Sligo panel as they take on Fermanagh in a local North west derby in the national hurling league.
