Tribute to Shane Gilroy
It was with
great shock and sadness that we learned of the untimely and
tragic death of Club player Shane Gilroy on Mon
7th May 2012 at
the young age of twenty five. Shane was a great clubman and was
always eager and available to help out in the Club at playing,
coaching and refereeing underage games. He started his football
career for the Club at the age of five and won U-9 and U-11 City
Board Leagues in the mid 90’s. He was a valuable member of the
Club’s historic U-14 Team which represented Sligo in Feile Peil
na nOg in Coolmeen Co Clare in 1999. Shane was a very skilful
player and was equally at ease with either foot and he
represented the Team in the skills competition at the Feile. He
also won the U-14 League and Championship in 1999 thus
completing the treble at U-14 level which was a historic first
for the Club. He was on the U-16 Team that won the U-16 League
in 2001. Shane progressed to the Int and Junior Teams and was
always first at training and last to leave. He received the
‘’Clubs Intermediate Player of the Year Award in 2006’’ for his
reliability, dependability, his exquisite skill and pace and
for getting some great scores from play and from frees. For
his humility and honesty and for getting on with life on and off
the field without any fuss’’.
Shane was truly
one of nature’s gentlemen and his outstanding personal qualities
endeared him to his many friends who were all shocked and
saddened at his sudden death.
The final
whistle blew for Shane on Mon
7th May 12
and he has left an indelible mark on all who knew him in his
short stay amongst us. We are all enriched for having known
Shane and are the poorer for his passing. We offer our sincere
condolences to Shane’s mother Mary and father John , his
brothers Keith, Trevor and Jason and sister Aisling and all his
relations and friends. They can justly remember him with pride
and affection.
May his gentle
soul rest in peace. Ni beidh a leithid ann aris. Ar dheis De go
raibh a ainm dhilis.
